Hey Don...take a look at this update:

WEDNESDAY, MAY 14, 2008 11:11 PM, CDT
Sorry we have not updated CaringBridge lately. Things have been so busy! I recently completed driving training with hand controls, so we got them installed in my Murano! We were able to use the money that many of yall raised for various expenses including getting my car modified so I can drive. Two of my physical therapists and I are going to participate in the Danskin triathlon and each complete a leg of the race. Of course I am doing the swimming part, so I have been training downtown in Deep Eddy pool. Last week I finished 9 hours of classes so I registered for 6 this summer. I also plan on doing a summer internship at my church that is a big time commitment. I feel that I can pass on what I have learned from this experience to students at Hill Country Bible Church. I am also so excited that all my friends came back from college, but it will be hard to balance work, therapy, school, and friends. My newest thing in therapy is that I walk on my knees with a super short walker. I try to do this every day when going short distances in the house. I go two days a week to therapy at St. Davids and the therapists have trained my parents to do therapy with me in the pool. The therapists have said they can see that my glutes have grown and they feel my quads kicking in more, especially when doing step exercises in the pool. Even though, the progress is slow, I am ecstatic that I am still getting nerve return. Thanks for praying and keep it up, its working. - from Betsy Helbing's blog

Betsy is writing her own blog entries now. Perhaps you've inspired her? Keep praying and know you are investing in the future of a 19 year old who is walking by faith "on her knees".

Don, I'm concerned about the fedex package. I'd feel better if they were putting your drugs *inside* as opposed to sticking them on the outside of the box.

much love to ya brothah! you inspire me

Hey Don,

Glad to hear your MRI results are positive. I've now finished my second surgery in Pittsburgh and will hopefully be done with the "cutting" now. The first surgery confirmed 90%-100% tumor removal and the second surgery (a week later) was due to a pin hole sized CSF leak which needed to be repaired. Not fun but almost done.

You've encouraged me to pray and pray BIG - I think it is working for both of us!

Just so you know, the slight visual deficit in your right eye to the right of center is NORMAL. You have a similar one in your left but you can't see it due to your large blind spot. It is a natural blind spot that we all have so don't worry about it. However, I do plan to stay off the sidewalk while in your neighborhood!! :-)

Hang in there, young man, your smile is still my inspiration! Keep up the great attittude.

Best of luck on your next steps in your journey. I'll continue to check in on you.

Hi Don! After Brian had radiation (this was 10 years ago), he had exorbitant amounts of swelling causing ALL KINDS of problems from seizures to headaches. The radiation turned out to be such a blessing from a prognosis standpoint, but it definitely had its shortcomings within the first year. He was on 16 mg of Decadron and swelled up from it (moon face and stretch marks as are a common side effect of Decadron), but it made his problems go away. The effects of the radiation were seen for 2 years always causing us turmoil when reviewing the scans, but always attacking more cancer cells since the radiation works gradually.

Hope to see you sing on Sunday. I will be praying the Lord bless your time and your voice.

SOOO Glad to hear Duke is covered! Praise the Lord!

HI Don. You may not remember me, but I met you at church a couple months ago. I introduced myself and told you my husband is also battling a GBM. He was diagnosed nearly 11 years ago, with an AA III, that evolved last year. Anyway, I got an email about you today and saw you ALSO had a blog. Yeah, now I can keep up with you.

We were very blessed as members of the congregation by your singing on Wednesday, as with every time you sing.

My husband tolerated Temodar quite well. We just had to change regimen's as the latest MRI showed some growth. It has been a year and we feel blessed for that great year. He also sees Dr. Geoffroy and he is now taking Avastin and CPT-11. The Avastin is not covered by Cat/United Healthcare, unfortunately, but since they are trying to get this approved for use with brain tumors, the drug company is offering it to us at no charge for now. Hey, what can I say, I didn't even know to pray about that one, but God took care of that need.

I am sorry about your dad. 11 years ago when Brian was diagnosed, his Dad was battling melanoma (and doing fine now) and his sister-in-law was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was strange.

Anyway, glad to read up on your progress. I will add you to my daily blog reads. As a blogger, I now have A LOT OF THEM!

for a recently diagnosed prostate cancer, I highly recommend Dr. Mani Menon at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI. We live in FL, and my husband was diagnosed in Oct. 2007, had surgery in Detroit 12-11-07, and no signs of the cancer now. He had a very aggressive prostate cancer - a stage 3, and a 3+4=7 on the gleason scale. We were very nervous about the idea of going out of state for treatment, but we couldn't be happier with the experience. You can do a google search for Henry Ford Hospital website, and Dr. Menon, or call toll free at 888-881-1117 or email aellerb1@hfhs.org (Arleeta). She will take you through the simple steps to get information.

Dr. Menon does a laproscopic, robotic assisted surgery. He pioneered this surgery and has done more of them than anyone. It is far less trauma than any other prostate surgery. My husband was in the hospital less than 24 hr.s. call me 904/704-9726 if you want to talk
