On October 31, 2009, my Lord threw His loving arms around me tightly, invited me to enjoy life in this new world of His and pronounced me cancer free. He promised you and me a miracle if we prayed BIG, and He has kept His promise.

All the other tenors in Heaven have a new voice to worship with, forever and ever. What a sound that would be!!!
Don, I cherish the times I had the chance to sing with the quartet, and get to know your powerful spirit. Your testimony will not fade. It has made the difference in many lives, and I venture to say it will continue. Fly into His arms, and rest now.
Eileen and girls, there are many at this very moment that are thinking of you, lifting up prayers, and wanting to hold you. You are blessed, and please know you have friends and family that will be here for the long haul for you.

Eileen & Girls
I met Don at an IdM event in London a couple of years ago when he visited with some other colleagues from Sun. In my line of work I meet hundreds of new people each year in similar circumstances, but few have made the lasting impression on me that Don did. So why was this? Well, I am not entirely sure how to sum it up but here goes.
To start with he was one of those people who you gravitate to, a warmth, a natural friendliness, an energy, a wit and a listener. He instantly struck me as a GOOD man, no facade and no conceit and as someone who took huge enjoyment from life and the people in it. His love for his family, his wife and his girls of whom he was clearly so proud, leaked from every pour and as a new father this resonated profoundly with me at the time. I wanted to be as happy and as in love as this guy when I was nearly 50, when my family were grown up!
When I first found out that he was sick, I reached out to him (on this blog in fact) to express my concern, worry and support. Shortly after I called him and we spoke about all sorts of topics. Despite the illness he seemed unchanged, untouched by the stress that one would imagine someone in his condition would be feeling. In fact, he seemed to spend a long time trying to make ME feel better and alleviating MY concern. This was Don. I asked him if there was anything I could do for him from all the way over here in the UK (feeling useless) and he asked me to pray big. I’m not religious, I would not describe myself as having any particular faith but I promised him that I would. He told me that didn’t matter, that God would hear me anyway – so I did, often.
Don was at least 1 foot shorter than me yet in my eyes he was a giant of a man. I will miss him even though we only spoke occasionally. I am sad that he is no longer with us but I am happy he is no longer in any discomfort and safe with God. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Eileen & girls, at this difficult time.
With love,
Brent Thurrell and family

Don was blessed to have such wonderful family and friends helping him through this. His faith was so strong, too. Mr. Bowen, you did a wonderful job with the blog. It was inspiring and seemed like it was just what Don would have said. I wrote on facebook the lyrics of the 23rd psalm that we used to sing in choir with Don at MHS. We were all blessed to have known him. Our love and prayers are with all of you.

I sent the email below to Don a few days earlier. I don’t know if he received it. My guess is he didn’t, which is a reminder to me and I suppose to many of us that we should not wait to let people know how much they mean to us. I am copying my email below as a form of eulogy to Don, and as a message to all of us, especially to Eileen, the girls, and to Don’s parents, that even though we grieve we should consider ourselves fortunate to have shared Don’s journey with him however short.
As you read the email please keep in mind that I had the good fortune of meeting Don only 2 times and speaking with him maybe 4 times. In other words, one didn’t need to spend much time with Don to be touched by his spirit.
Here is the email:
Don, I don’t know if I mentioned to you that I am a subscriber and regular reader of your updates. I suspect you have been told this many times by many people, but I want you to know that you are an inspiration to me. I hope to learn from you courage, humor, hope, and faith in the face of the adversities we will all have to go through at some time or the other. Your family and friends are fortunate to have someone like you in their lives.
Best regards,
Rajiv

I spoke to Don once, many many years back, on the phone. I don’t recal the details of the conversation now. What I do recall is the deep impression Don left on me, about his deep knowledge and passion for his work.
He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. My sincere condolences to his family and may God rest his soul in peace.
November 1, 2009 at 2:59 pm |
I went to church today, in large part to pray for Don. While a quartet was singing on All Saints Day, I thought to myself that what they were missing was Don’s amazing tenor voice. Then I got home and saw that he’d passed. We’re all missing Don and his strong tenor today. He made a huge impression on me and I’ll miss him greatly. My heart hurts.
A few years ago, we traveled as a group to an Idm conference in Monaco and Eileen joined Don for the trip. I remember seeing the way they looked at each other and thinking to myself that that’s what true love looks like. I was reminded of that when we got to see you both this spring.
All my sincere condolences to Eileen and the girls.

Don is face to face with Jesus and now he is like Him. Congratulations Don. I can hear Jesus say, “Well done good and faithful servant.” We’ll be up there with you for life is a vapor….
Love you Eileen and girls. We are continuing to pray for you and we are proud of your lives and response to all of God’s plan you and the girls.

Don has always been a model for me on keeping a positive outlook on all of life’s challenges. I almost think of him as the character Don from the Richard Bach book, Illusions, for he brought a gentle wisdom and perspective on how to see the world in ways that we’re often too busy to see for ourselves.

Eileen and Bowen family,
We are sad for your deep loss but know that Don brought much life and love to you and your family as well as to all who knew him. Don’s heart was forever praising his Lord and Savior. He was truly a man who ran the race with everything he had in him. He helped us all to understand how to live even if life’s challenges are difficult.
We are praying for you.

Such a gift of love and example of courage for us all. Hello to Don’s family. I know Don is in a place of love and gentleness that gives us all hope for our own moment of re-birth to our home. I know he will be close when his loved ones feel the pangs of his absence giving hugs of love and compassion for our sadness as loved ones go far from sight. I remember Don’s laughter and smile from my days in high school.
Prayers of peace for his journey,
Maggie Keller

Don, You arrived in heaven on such a special day — All Saints Day! I know the “Crown of Life” that God presented to you is shining as bright as the North Star! You shared your journey with integrity, acceptance, and abounding inner strength. Your love for God was one of steadfast faith and grace. You were a brave solider for Christ! I did not have the good fortune to meet you in person, but I know in my heart I will see you one day in glory! My sincere sympathy to you, Mrs. Bowen, your children and other family members. Don, what a privelege it was to have know you, I am only sorry that our paths didn’t cross sooner. You were such an inspiration to me, your spirit never wavered in your struggle. You always blessed me when I was over at your house to see you, by praying for me even when you were hurting. You will truly be missed here on this earth. I know that you are having the time of your life in heaven, sining with the angles.
To Elieen and the girls know that I am here for you and want to continue to walk with you in your journey of healing. You girls have also been an inspiration to me on how you have handled your Dad’s sickness. What a joy it has been getting to know Don’s 5 girls.

I only knew Don through his blog. Thankyou to Don and his family for sharing his journey through brain cancer. My husband is living with brain cancer, 2 yrs and 11 months. I checked Don’s blog everyday for updates. His humor and insight helped me deal with the terror of this disease. Somehow it always felt like as long as others with brain cancer were surviving there was hope for us. I feel a profound loss whenever I learn of someone with brain cancer losing their battle. Eileen, my heart breaks for you. I hope that all those who prayed for Don will continue their prayers for a cure. Cancer takes too many loved ones away from their families and community.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Don and his family.
I worked with Don a couple years at CAT just before his departure to Sun. During those years, his passion and enthusiasm led him to accomplish things which only a true “Wizard of IdM” could have done. And Don’s IdM accomplishments at CAT, which live on today, are now classified as “mission critical” within CAT’s IT world.
I now see that Don’s passion and enthusiasm permeated every part of his life, not just his work. And that included his inspiringly brave battle with cancer. Now cancer-free, I’m sure Don is already accomplishing great things in Heaven, just as he did here on Earth.

I just learned of Don’s passing this morning & still have no words. Don made me laugh. Don made me think. Don made me thankful. Don’s memory will make me try to be a better person. My heart goes out to his family & friends who love him. You have a virtual crowd of people out here praying BIG for you all.
I know you’re out there somewhere Don. I just did a replay of our “Pimp My Privacy” podcast & you made me smile…again.

I Cor. 9:24 ”Do you not know that those who run a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win”.
This verse says a lot about the way Don Bowen lived his life… including the way he would say this verse “don’t you know- as in “don’t you get it.. you’ve got to run -not for running’s sake- but to win!” As long as I knew Don, he lived his life with great passion and purpose in every way… including a very strong desire to please God. His photo on 10/26 with him sitting in his chair smiling at the camera- that sparkle still was there in the eye he had open- showed a man’s man very near to that finish line of complete and total victory. Of course, Don wasn’t perfect as no one here is, but Don knew about victory… I couldn’t beat him in tennis or ping pong. Board games became very stressful as he would seem to focus so intensely and put every fiber into winning. Don’s first job out of college was working for my Dad. The word was Don was training to “run this race” even back then as he and one of his associates would travel to see various clients and Don would have his 3″ x 5″ note cards with scripture written on it so he could memorize them during travel. This was back around 1982. Don would get snickers from co-workers because they thought it was so odd that someone would do that. They didn’t know what Don was doing. They weren’t aware of his purpose and of his training! Don was the guy in my life who first shared the gospel with me… the first time someone had told me it wasn’t enough to be a good person- that my sins had separated me from God and because of that, there was an impassable chasm between where I stood and where heaven was. And because of it, I was not favored by God- in fact I was an enemy. And because of that there is no way even the best person can be good enough to get there. Because God is not only perfect love, He is perfect and terrifyingly just. Only one way can a bridge reach from where I was to where heaven is and its God’s way- his son Jesus, the only perfect one was sent from heaven and died on the cross for our sins… and then Don drew the cross between the chasm for me and explained why we needed to live for Jesus now. That was in my dorm room in winter time early 1982 at Olson Hall, 7th floor, at Western Illinois University. I miss Don very much and the world isn’t the same without him here and I feel guilty that I didn’t come around as I could have the past year or more. What a guy! What a Dad, son and husband I am sure!!!!! I will always hold Don Bowen in highest regard. I was thinking so much of Don during worship at church tonight. No Christian is too far away from each other- especially during worship…. we were likely both raising our hands and worshiping Jesus at the same time together. One from this point of view “as seeing but a poor reflection in the mirror”, but Don seeing face to face.

Don, I wanted to thank you for the example that you display. I know we haven’t met in person yet, but I am still looking forward to the day when we will meet. I initially turned to your blog for the technical matter, but that’s when I learned of your character and faith. After then I turned to it to follow a true man of God and hope to learn something from your example as a role model. I pray that I might be able to live life to the standard you set.
Eileen and girls, my heart aches at your loss. I never met Don in person, but came into contact with him in the Identity field. I have held your husband and father in the highest regard, and have shared his story with others I know. I recall the visit he and the girls made to GMA related to the Purity Ball, I thought to myself what an awesome and Godly man this is. He is truly a testament to God’s love and faith. I know if his story has touched me the way it has that there are others out there who have been and will be moved. God is still using Don’s story and there is still work to do in the fields. I know no words I give can comfort you well enough, but please know that I and my family have been and will continue to pray for you.
In Christ,
Chris

What a privilege and honor to have known Don and share in some key events in his life. I can’t believe we met 30 years ago in 1979 as new believers in Christ at Western Illinois University in Macomb. (Olson 8) One of the earliest humorous times that I remember was when I was struggling though computer basic at W.I.U. and failing! I gave Don a call. He tutored me on computer “Basic”, I passed the class! Little did I know he would have an amazing career in IT. In college, he always inspired and challenged me even from our first meeting and involvement in the Navigators. If that were not enough, I was there when he met Eileen, his wife to be, in the Olson Hall cafeteria. Later, I was again privileged to be in their wedding. Don even even took the time after I had moved to come out to my wedding (in Phoenix) some years later. While visiting he even interviewed my wife! (then my fiancée) to make sure she was a “good match”for me the first time he met her! Despite being miles apart and the passage of time (now thirty years), he never forgot what you were up to.
It was a great time to visit with him again last fall (2008) despite his sickness with the cancer. The passage of time didn’t matter. Don said to me, “this is just like the old days at Western”. We picked up where we last left off and had time to talk and reflect on these past several years. Don and I asked ourselves, “Have we become the men, the fathers, and husbands we wanted to be?” That’s Don. He was never satisfied with being second best in any area of his life, and didn’t feel sorry for himself with what he was going through. He would say, “What more can I do?”, and continuously sought new challenges in all areas of his life.
During that visit, Don was having vision issues and his printer and scanner weren’t working. Now I am in IT (computers) and had an opportunity to fix both units for him and recalled the help he gave me thirty years ago. I started laughing a bit and while scanning some photos for him, Don asked me, “What are you laughing about?” I answered him, “Are you kidding me? I just was able fix the great Don Bowen’s computer and do something for you after all this time, I’m enjoying the moment!” During this, last battle, he still always had a word of encouragement for everyone and would have a verse from the Bible handy to share from his heart. Recently, I was reading and praying for his family, and a verse came to mind that provided comfort about Don,“Precious in the sight of the LORD Is the death of His godly ones” (Psalm 116:15). I know God will provide and keep his family during his earthly absence.
God has and will honor Don’s commitment of faith in him. He has blessed him and his family (how awesome are they!), and so many, many others in such a big way through his life. God never forgot Don, who is now enjoying that new life with him. For us, our thoughts and prayers remain with the Bowen family for their comfort at this time. Don, you will always be remembered as my friend and inspiration in the things that count.

Living on the other side of the world, I always knew of Don and was privileged to have met him a few times at Conferences. I’d often see the Wizard quoted and visit his blog. I’d then spend hours on welcome inspirational distraction with a smile on my face.
You reap what you sow and Don has an exceptional network of friends and family. His view on life and all of its opportunities was full of an optimism that always came across as realism.
I read his last few posts this morning with tears in my eyes and a strong sense of joy. Normally, a strange thing to write but I’m sure a sentiment that others may share. Don is the epitomy of a life well shared. My thoughts are with all of his family and friends at this time as you continue his journey.
